Article: Fix for Increased Ping Latency on 2003 R2 server VM’s in Hyper-V

Last year I contacted HP regarding our Hyper-V servers issue, with very high ping latency between VM’s.

HP recommends that we updater the NIC drivers on the host as well as the Firmware for each server.

These are the 2008 Server x64 Hosts. You can download this from the HP website under support and drivers, choose the model of the Hyper-V host server and download the appropriate CP files that pertain to the built in NIC card for that model Server.

Once you update the drivers and Firmware you will have to reboot the host server. I noticed that once this has been completed the issue was resolved. If this does not resolve the issue you can also try the next step:

This step is done on the actual 2003 VM servers, you edit the boot.ini and add the /usepmtimer to the end of the boot sting.

To resolve this problem, configure Windows Server 2003 to use the PM_TIMER setting instead of the time-stamp counter. To do this, add the /usepmtimer parameter to the Boot.ini file, and then restart the server.

Note The /usepmtimer parameter is automatically added to the Boot.ini file when you install the latest AMD PowerNow! Technology driver from AMD. The updated driver itself does not resolve this problem. However, the installation process makes the necessary changes to the Boot.ini file to resolve this problem.
